The 1970s are alive and well in this beach shack on Tasmania’s bucolic Bruny Island, which has been lovingly restored to its former glory, replete with vintage stove, chocolate brown-tiled kitchen and baby pink bathroom.

“It was built in 1970 and has been in the same family up until recently when we purchased it,” say the owners. They fell in love with the original features of the shack; features that other buyers might have sought to replace. “I loved the simple yet classic mid-century details of the property and knew just how special it could be with a little imagination and some more vintage features,” they explain. “The project has been a slow burn as we only get to work on it on our free weekends and when our toddler allows. It has completely transformed since we first got the keys.”

Channelling the building’s mid-century history was key in the renovation, with its original features informing the design. A lot of the inspiration came from the existing features, as well as all the vintage pieces I sourced for the space,” they say. “This included things like vintage doors, furniture and fixtures—they helped write the story for each room.”

“I wanted to wholeheartedly embrace the idea of the iconic Australian 60s beach shack and really drove that through every inch of the design and renovation.”

The pink bathroom is Wes Andersonesque in its filmic, dreamily pastel palette, while the kitchen is steeped in 1970s nostalgia, and not in a derivative way; it feels truly authentic. “The kitchen really came together once I found the vintage St George cooker, vintage screen-printed wallpaper and 1960s overhead cupboards,” note the owners.

TradCo hardware was used to complete their vision for the shack, with the solid brass Mid-Century Lever with Long Backplate being the perfect finishing detail. “The mid-century TradCo hardware blends seamlessly into the existing hardware in the shack, as all the preexisting handles are the same style,” say the owners.

The Mid-Century Levers were paired with Standard Pull Handles on the kitchen’s walnut-toned wooden cabinetry and Victorian Hat and Coat Hooks on the back of the bathroom’s flesh-pink doors. “If you didn’t know any better you’d say they were always there, which I love.”

In TradCo this family found a brand that worked with the heritage of their property, rather than against it. “It was fitting to use TradCo hardware because of the beautiful finishes and seamless, vintage designs,” they say. “I wanted any new hardware to just blend in and feel like it belonged in the space, and TradCo hardware did exactly that.”
