This Tasmanian home doesn’t disappoint. There are no handfed squirrels, sure, but what it lacks in magic it more than makes up for in nostalgic design. Think gingham linen and rattan boxes, and tones of teal, mustard and off-whites as delectable as double cream.
“When we moved to Tasmania two years ago, we fell in love with a special cottage nestled among the orchards and rolling hills of the Huon Valley,” says Eliska Sharp, who shares Glenlossie Cottage with husband, Ethan. “The house itself is around 150 years old and was originally built for the owner of a local apple orchard. Like many homes in the region, it’s modest in scale but full of character and history.”
The couple set about renovating the house, but understanding the heritage of the building was important to them even before they picked up a hammer, “I grew up in Prague and spent years travelling throughout Europe surrounded by historic homes and buildings where craftsmanship and heritage details are simply part of everyday life,” explains Sharp. “Those experiences shaped the way I see materials and design, and they naturally influenced the choices we made while restoring our own home. From the moment we moved in, we continued the journey of preserving the beautiful story of the house while carefully restoring its warmth and authenticity.”
Hardware was key to this approach, she says, “Because our cottage is relatively small, architectural details play an important role in the overall feel of the space. Door handles, light switches and cabinetry hardware become small focal points, so choosing pieces that felt authentic to the era of the house was very important to us.” TradCo hardware met their needs on every level, “Throughout the cottage we installed TradCo switches, along with new door handles and cabinetry hardware. The hardest part was choosing which pieces to go with, as there were so many beautiful options that would have suited the house.”
Eventually they settled on a few choice pieces: the Classic Centre Doorknobs, the Reims Lever on Long Backplate and Victorian Lever on Round Rose, as well as traditionally-styled Panic Bolts for the doors; and for the lighting they opted for Traditional Light Switches replete with tactile toggles, supported by TradCo’s Gang Flat Plate Rocker Switches with Double Sockets. “
TradCo felt like a natural choice,” says Sharp. “My work as a photographer has influenced how we’ve approached the restoration, and I had admired TradCo’s pieces while photographing other homes. Their heritage-inspired designs and solid brass finishes allowed us to select hardware that truly complements the character of the cottage.”
Upon installation, Sharp knew her hunch was well-founded, “Once everything was installed, it felt as though the pieces had always belonged there,” she notes. “They sit so naturally within the home that they almost disappear into the story of the space, which is exactly what we hoped for.”
For Sharp, it’s not just about how the home feels now, but how it will continue to feel as this building moves into the future, “It’s comforting to know that the changes we’ve made will stand the test of time and do justice to the history of this home,” she says. “For us, that sense of authenticity and longevity was incredibly important, and TradCo helped us achieve that in a way that feels both beautiful and true to the spirit of the cottage.”
