Homeowners Lindy and Gavin brought this Victorian cottage back to life. Their approach was to restore what they could and replace only what they had to. “Restoration isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s about respect.”

There are TradCo details throughout the home. A polished brass mortice knob and Edwardian door knocker greet you at the front door. The restored sash windows have antique brass lifts and fasteners, and traditional toggle switches sit on cedar blocks. In the rebuilt kitchen, porcelain and brass pulls finish the cabinetry.

Before air conditioning, a home’s comfort depended on its windows. Sashes were raised, casements swung wide and fanlights tilted open, and each of those movements relied on a small piece of hardware.

Over the decades, many of those fittings have been painted over, replaced or lost. Our latest guide shows you how to find the right ones, starting with two questions: what type of window you have, and what era your home is.

From Colonial Georgian sashes to Queenslander casements and Federation fanlights, it covers the fittings each window needs, how they work and the period finishes that suit them.

In Ipswich, @hannahpuechmarin designed a timber cottage kitchen inspired by Britain and Wales. It has Tasmanian oak cabinetry, spotted gum benchtops and hand-illustrated botanical tiles. She finished it with our Domed Cupboard Knobs and Classic Drawer Pulls in Unlacquered Brass, chosen to match the home’s original brass and copper fixtures.

“More than anything, I wanted the kitchen to tell a story.”
